GO BACK 2006 2004-2005

Mrs. Monk's Would-be Diary, should have been written by Mrs. Monk, since she is the "Writer" in the family.
However, since she is a writer only in the conceptual sense, I have undertaken to fill these pages on her behalf.
If not by her, these pages will certainly be about her, and other important matters of the day

Leslie Monk, the long suffering.

Mrs Monk’s

Would-Be Diary

Sunday Afternoon

15 October 2006

Mrs Monk and I came across this demo in Park Lane These men were beating their chests and backs energetically and rhythmically to a megaphoned chant that we could not decipher. It must have hurt since they were extremely miserable and their flesh glowed red by the repeated self-inflicted blows. We noticed two men who had scars over the whole of their backs where they had been wounded on other occasions.

They were carolled by policemen behind a thin white tape. Women in black Muslim dress were separate but nearby looking on.

Young boys also stripped to the waist participated in the ritual.

The Police did not intervene and allowed their freedom of expression.
